Green Growth Africa Sustainability Network (Green Growth Africa) is a UNEP-accredited Civil Society Organisation that is committed to the realisation of a socially inclusive economic growth and development path that is low-carbon, climate-resilient, and resource-efficient; maintains and enhances biodiversity and ecosystems. Green Growth Africa drives her mission through knowledge generation, capacity building, networking, policy dialogues and development, communications, and advocacies.
Following the declaration of access to a “clean, safe and healthy environment as a human right” by the United Nations, Green Growth Africa’s EcoJustice Africa has developed digital tools to empower citizens to exercise their environmental rights to combat environmental crime and violations in Africa. The digital tools will address the multi-dimensional challenges of community environmental policing and increase its effectiveness with the effective engagement of relevant stakeholders to combat environmental crime in Africa. EcoJustice Africa seeks to raise a new generation of environmental activists, redefine environmental advocacy with improved effectiveness towards realising an environmentally-just Africa where citizens are empowered to exercise their environmental rights and their rights are respected.

Within the EcoJustice Africa initiative, Green Growth Africa (with support from the World Wide Fund for Nature, WWF) is instituting the EcoJustice Fellowship to support and train environmental activists, CSO leaders, and journalists, as “EcoFellows” in two streams (Field and Media).
The inaugural cohort of the fellowship is being named in honor of Nigeria’s former President, His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo for his support for green growth in Africa. H.E. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo proposed the Great Green Wall initiative, an African Union initiative that is aimed at restoring 100 hectares of degraded land; sequestering 250 million tons of carbon and creating 10 million green jobs by 2030. The ‘wall’, which is now being implemented in 22 African countries, seeks to restore Africa’s degraded landscape transform millions of lives in the Sahel, and revitalise thousands of communities across the continent.
In addition, Chief Obasanjo spearheaded the establishment of Olusegun Obasanjo Library (OOPL), a cutting-edge mega facility whose design and operation incorporates social, economic, and environmental dimensions in an integrated manner.
Powered by a distributed 2MW solar energy system, OOPL provides a model of green and sustainable facilities that could inspire effective integration of environmental sustainability in social and economic development projects and facilities, including city planning.

I. Field EcoJustice Fellowship
Benefits
• Training and capacity building on knowledge and skills on environmental rights, justice, policy advocacy, activism, and engagement including community environmental policing

• Training on the use of dedicated digital tools for community environmental advocacy and reporting

• Opportunity to be featured in media interviews, dialogues, and discourse on environmental justice
• USD 300 for logistics of your local activities as an EcoJustice Fellow
Role
• serve as an Ambassador to create awareness, train, coordinate, and engage with citizens, CSOs, among other rightsholders as “EcoAdvocates” to know and exercise their environmental rights
• Train environmental activists, youth, and, local community members among other stakeholders on the use of dedicated digital tools for environmental advocacy and reporting
• Provide in-country verification of local environmental news, projects and updates in your country provide
• Serve as an EcoReporter to provide in-country situation reports to a Green Growth Situation Room, a green growth media and broadcasting outfit.

Requirement
• Minimum of 2 years work experience (employment or volunteering) in environmental activism, implementing environmental initiatives, local community engagement on environmental subjects, and volunteering work for the environment, among other active environmental engagements
• Prior experience in combating environmental crimes and violations is not required but is an added advantage
• Minimum of a University degree or its equivalent
• Ability to speak and write in the English language
• Affiliated with a non-profit or civil society organization
• Based in an African country

II. Media EcoJustice Fellows
Benefit
• Training and capacity building on knowledge and skills on environmental rights, justice, policy advocacy, activism, and engagement including community environmental policing
• Exposure to global environmental laws, policies and frameworks
• Training on the use of dedicated digital tools for community environmental advocacy and reporting
• Opportunity to present your media reports at the Green Growth Forum 2024 to leaders in government, private sector, international, multilateral and development organisations including traditional rulers
• USD 300 for developing a comprehensive environmental report as an EcoJustice Fellow

Role
• Carry out a comprehensive environmental report (such as an investigative report, documentary, etc) focused on environmental rights, crime, and justice. Priority will be given to proposals of investigative reports on real cases of environmental crimes that cover the engage with the government, and analyses of existing laws and policies that address the reported environmental crimes.
• Provide support to the Green Growth Situation Room to increase the newsworthiness of EcoReports
• Facilitate engagement with conventional media organizations for amplified policy engagement advocacy

Requirement
• Minimum of 5 years work experience (employment or volunteering) in media
• Demonstrated reportage on environmental subjects (e.g. environmental crimes, renewable energy, climate change, biodiversity, among others)
• Minimum of a University degree or its equivalent
• Ability to speak and write in English language
• Affiliated to a media organisation
• Based in an African country
